FULL REVIEW :

Timekeeper, by Tara Sim, is about Danny Hart, a prodigy clock mechanic who is assigned to Enfield's Colton Tower. Danny also lost his beloved dad to a Stopped town, where everything is still, and time loops endlessly until the clock is fixed. Danny himself was previously in a horrible accident with a bomb rigged clock, and consequently has panic attacks around clocks. In order to get over his fear, he is sent to repair Colton Tower, where he meets it's clock spirit. But on the loose is a desperate bomber, and at stake is his true happiness and chance to see his father again.

The creative plot, setting, and characters, all made me fall in love with this book. The whole concept of clocks literally controlling time is really fascinating, especially the clock spirits. Also the fact that the romance was important, but not the premise, made me love it more. The setting of England in the time when cars are just becoming a thing really aided a lot of the plot. Of course, the characters also boosted the story. All the characters had depth and feelings. Even though his dad is rarely mentioned, it still feels like you know him.

My favorite character has to be Daphne, because while she isn't necessarily a main character, she still influences the story heavily. The fact that she has an exchange program, has a relative in the hospital, and is the only female clock mechanic mentioned just really struck me. I know confident, strong women, who still have flaws and insecurities, are becoming cliche, but Daphne felt real. Not just female character made to seem epic, but someone who has flaws and passions.

The age range on the cover says 14+, so I'll stick with that. Personally, I agree, since does include more violent topics. Also the gay romance is highlighted, so if that isn't something you support or are comfortable with, this book isn't for you.

I have to give this 4.7 stars. It's a super good book, and I recommend this for all genre readers as a way to get into more science/fantasy fiction.
